Snapshot of a boy standing in the Lourdes grotto at St. John's. He wears a checked flat cap, and a light-colored cardigan over shirt and tie.
Black and white, approximately 3 1/4 x 3 3/8 inches. Is not cut square.
Written on back: "Leo Schmitz / (Fr. Romuald Schmitz / OSB)."
Leo started as a student at St. John's in the 1914-1915 academic year. He graduated (as a college sophomore) in 1918, and entered the novitiate the same year, taking the religious name Romuald.

Snapshot of two men skating on Lake Sagatagan. Younger man, in front, is Gerard Zankl. He has dark hair, and wears a three-piece checked suit with his trousers tucked into his socks, and a flat cap or newsboy cap. Behind him is Gilbert Winkelmann in monastic habit, flat cap, eyeglasses, and possibly a short jacket.
In the right background is the Lourdes grotto. In left background, at the top of the slope, is the Quadrangle. Near the shore is a shack with its door propped open; it was used as a dressing room/bath house.
Black and white, 2 1/2 x 4 1/16 inches.
Written on back: "Gerard Zankl (Fr. Angelo OSB) / Fr. Gilbert Winkelmann OSB."
Gerard C. Zankl, also spelled Gerhard, arrived at St. John's as a student in the 1913-1914 academic year, and entered the novitiate in 1920, taking the religious name Angelo.

Head-and-shoulders studio portrait of dark-haired man in monastic habit and Roman collar. Short hair parted on the side, with an undercut, and swept up in center. Hair retouched.
Black and white, brown tone. 3 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches. Silvering. Has stray ink mark on right edge, from retouching brush.
Written on back: "Rev. David Juenger, O.S.B."
Francis ("Frank") Yuenger was a student of St. John's University from 1896 to 1903, and entered the novitiate for St. John's Abbey in July 1903, taking the religious name David. He was ordained a priest in 1909.
This photo was used in the Sagatagan, 1923, page 30.
