CSB had monks as chaplains from the beginning of its history and two priests from SJU also taught in the theology department. Women were not permitted to get degrees in theology until the late 1940s when St. Mary's College, Indiana, offered an M.A. and PhD degree in theology for women religion. Sister Berchmans received her degree from there. In the 1950s there was just a few exchanges of faculty from one campus to the next -- for example, Social Work, Sociology, and Art and by 1954 women and men were permitted to be in plays together (see Highlights of the History of Cooperation between the College of St. Benedict's and St. John's University, 1953 to1967) Finding Aids for History of CSB/SJU Cooperation, 1963 to 1993 1. Six Phases of Cooperation Adobe Themes and Major Questions on CSB/SJU Cooperation (summary by Renner) Issues and Challenges in CSB/SJU Cooperation (summary by Renner) Ten Lessons We Have Learned (summary by Renner and O'Connell) Summary of Chief Obstacles to Coordinate Relations Generalizations and Observations Activities of cooperation in the 1950s before the formal cooperation began: 1] Sister Nancy Hynes was in Johnny/Benny plays. She was in plays at SJU before Sister Colman became the head of CSB Theater Department. Sister Colman was responsible for incorporating students from both campuses in 1954-1955 for plays at CSB; 2] Sister Johanna Becker taught art on both campuses; 3] A few teachers in Sociology (and Social Work) taught on both campuses. Beginnings of discussion about more cooperation, 1961-1963: Letter from President Remberta to President Arno Gustin (April 24, 1961) on exchange of teachers for 1961-1962 (Father Paul to teach course on the Family at CSB and Fields of Social Work at SJU taught by S. Cathen Culhane. In the letter, Remberta says, "I am convinced that it would be to the advantage of both schools if we could offer more joint courses, especially in the upper division where classes are small. It would do much to conserve both teachers and classroom space. I would like to discuss with you...a teacher for French " SJU has requested from CSB." On May 3, 1961, SJU Abbot did not approve her request for a meeting. But in November 1962, President Arno Gustin asked Sister Remberta for a meeting of the CSB and SJU presidents, academic deans, and registrars "to discuss possibilities for sharing resources for the mutual benefit of both colleges." (see the notes in the Narratives of CSB/SJU Cooperation) Meeting of 2 presidents, academic deans, and registrars to discuss the possibility of cooperation (see minutes of Board of Trustees, December 10, 1962) Meeting of Abbot Baldwin Dworschak, Prioress Henrita Osendorf, two Presidents Arno Gustin and Linnea Welter, and secretary; Colman Barry, February 28, 1963 , p. 4.; Announcement in the Benet (May 1963) on "CSB-SJU Cooperation" (page 9); "Joint committees of Saint John's and Saint Benedict's administrators and faculty have been making plans toward a more structured basis of cooperation in faculty sharing for upper division courses on both campuses. At a meeting of both schools' department heads specific possibilities for course cooperation were discussed, and currently SJU and CSB registrars are working together to see how many of these suggestions can be worked out for the 1963-1964 school year. It is hoped that students, rather than faculty members, from one campus go to the other campus for classes, wherever such a plan might prove effective." Minutes of meetings of the Committee on Cooperative Academic Program, Second Semester 1963; Program (CCAP), February 28, 1963: they discussed: 1] possible areas of academic cooperation 2] the problems to be faced in academic exchange 3] underlying guidelines for cooperation CSB/SJU Correspondence, 1963 to 1966; Memos on CSB/SJU Cooperation in Education Department, 1964-69; Student Reactions to the Beginnings of Cooperation in Student Newspapers, 1964-1971; Joint Summer Study Curriculum Committee (JSSCC), 1964-1966; List of Documents on CSB/SJU Cooperation, 1962-1973: Sister Firmin Escher's essay on the "Special Characteristics of CSB/SJU Cooperation, 1962-1973 (from the 1974 Report to NCATE); Sister Firmin Escher's "1962-1965: Cooperation Beginnings," CSB/SJU Decisions on Cooperation, 1963: 1] Guidelines and Rationale for Cooperation; 2] Reasons for Cooperation; 3] The most important consequence of this commitment to cooperation: " We sought practical ways of cooperating that would benefit both institutions in order to provide a better education to students on both campuses."
