"The Governance of the Coordinate Relationship” Approval by the Joint Boards, May 7, 1993 Approval of document on "The Governance of the Coordinate Relationship (May 7, 1993) 1. General Principles: a. The coordinate relationship is the optimal way for the two separate colleges to proceed into the future and is distinct from a legal merger; b. Enhancement of quality of the education which the two college provide requires that we clarify the characteristics which they share and those which they hold separately c. The two colleges need to create a dependable sphere in which their coordinate relationship can be conducted effectively d. The purpose of the coordinate relationship is to continually improve educational quality in response to the perceived needs of students and the larger society 2. Board Actions for major objectives a. Mission and Vision (creation of an ad HOC joint board committee on coordinate relations to understand and exercise appropriate governance of the coordination) and require administration to prepare: 1] statements of coordinate mission, values, and vision 2] a coordinate strategic plan and a mechanism for keeping it current 3] audits of the distinctive culture of each college 4] a comprehensive assessment plan b. Academic Affairs united as a joint board committee on coordinate relations to ensure excellence of the joint common curriculum and its centrality in relationship to the separate programming and emphases of each college c. Student Development: essential to enhance the learning of both women and men in the residential program as well as in academic program d. Institutional Advancement: creation of a sub-committee for institutional advancement to ensure the develop- ment activities are pursued vigorously in both separate and coordinate spheres to secure the well- being of the colleges e. Financial Matters: creation of a joint subcommittee on coordinate finances to ensure stewardship over its resources
