Kathleen was our first black student who graduated in 1942. Gertrude Danavall also entered in 1938 but did not graduate. Consuelo Romero, born to a Jamaican mother and a father who was Cuban and Chinese, graduated in 1943; In September 1938, alumnae from the St. Paul Chapter wrote to protest the acceptance of "collared" students. Sister Claire Lynch responded on September 27, 1938. She said: "The two negro students (about whom you are concerned) came to us highly recommended, both intellectually and socially. One of them is half English. Both are cultivated, intelligent young women, attractive in appearance. Two of our students, Betty Schneider and Josephine Zehnle, who did Social Work in New York under Baroness Catherine de Hueck the past summer, got them interested in St. Benedict's and urged that they come here to college. Since their arrival, there has been no manifestation of antipathy against them by either faculty or students. In fact, our student body have received them with the utmost courtesy and a spirit that is truly Christ like. We ourselves are assured that contact with such refined students as Gertrude Danavall and Kathleen Yanes will do much to break down preconceived racial prejudice, and exercise a broadening and educative influence on our student body as a whole."
