Basketball

1951: Frank First, March 1910

Full-length studio portrait of young man in basketball uniform. He wears a dark jersey with a broad light-colored stripe, on which are the letters S T J U arranged in a circle. He also wears dark knee pants, striped athletic socks, and ankle-high athletic shoes.

Frank J. First '16.

"Fr." is crossed out on the envelope, with "Frank" written above it.

Black and white, 5 x 7 inches. Small tear in the emulsion on his upper lip.

1953: Lanski, March 1910

Full-length studio portrait. Young man with dark hair parted in the middle, and hands behind his back. He wears a dark jersey with a broad light-colored stripe, on which are the letters S T J U arranged in a circle. He also wears dark knee pants, striped athletic socks, and ankle-high athletic shoes.

1962: John Weckwerth, March 1910

1966: Jr. Basketball Dribblers, March 1907

Studio portrait of six boys with a monk. The monk (Daniel Bangart) has dark wavy hair and is wearing eyeglasses, monastic habit, and clerical collar. The students wear dark short-sleeved jerseys with light-colored interlocking letters S T J U, padded pants with belts, dark stockings rolled down to their ankles, and ankle-height shoes. A basketball marked: "Dribblers / '07 / Champions" rests on a short pillar in the center.

The Dribblers were an intramural basketball team in the Junior Hall League.

2541: Tigers Basketball Team, 1908

Studio portrait of six boys in front of a painted backdrop. They wear plain light-colored tank tops, padded knee pants, dark stockings rolled down to their ankles, and athletic shoes. All but the boy in front center have their arms crossed; he holds a basketball labeled: "Tigers / '08."

Boy at front left is Charles Hardendorf '08. 14 years old in March 1908, and lived in the Junior Hall.

Possibly a mistake in team name. NOT the same students as in Basketball, volume 1, pages 26 and 27, where the same basketball can be seen. The 1908 Athletic Yearbook indicates that the Tigers played in the intramural American League, which had three Commercial teams and three Senior teams.

2542: Jr. Basketball, 1915

Studio portrait. Eight boys in shawl neck button-up cardigan sweaters, knickers, striped athletic socks, low lace-up boots. Boy seated in front row center is holding a basketball marked "Juniors 1915."

At least two of the sweaters have an interlocking "St J U" logo.

2546: Greenies, Basketball Team, 1909

Studio portrait of six young men. One wears a two-tone cardigan sweater with an interlocking letters S J U logo, over shirt and tie, and dark trousers. The rest are suited up for basketball in light-colored t-shirts with short sleeve caps, and padded pants.

The Greenies were an intramural basketball Minor League team in spring 1909.

2547: Major Champs Basketball Team, 1913

Studio portrait of eight boys and young men in front of a painted background. One wears a dark jacket over a dark turtleneck. The rest are in plain dark jerseys, padded pants, striped athletic socks, and ankle-height athletic shoes. The player in front center holds a basketball labeled: "Major Champs / 1913."

This may be the Disturbers of Major League B intramural basketball, who defeated the Sweepers of Major League A for the title in December 1912 or January 1913.

2548: VVV's Basketball Team, 1913, Champs

Studio portrait of seven boys and young men. One wears a dark jacket over a dark turtleneck; another wears a dark, collared, button-up sweater. The other five are dressed for basketball, in mismatched uniforms. The player seated in front center rests his hands on a basketball labeled: "V-V-V. / Champs / 1913."

2549: Greys Basketball Team, 1912

Studio portrait of six young men in basketball uniform. They wear plain tank tops (mostly dark), dark padded pants, striped athletic socks, and ankle-height athletic shoes. The player seated at front center cradles a basketball marked: "Greys / 1912."

The Greys were an intramural basketball team in the Major League in spring 1912.

2550: Mohawks Basketball Team, 1912

Studio portrait of seven boys and young men outfitted for basketball in dark padded pants, striped athletic socks, and ankle-height shoes. Their jerseys do not match: most are plain, one reads, "St J U," and another has the letters S T J U in a circle. The player seated at front center holds a basketball marked: "Mohawks / 1912."

The Mohawks were a second division Minor League intramural basketball team in spring 1912.

2551: Cubs Basketball Team, March 1909

Studio portrait of six young men. One wears a turtleneck sweater with a broad dark stripe. The rest wear light-colred t-shirts with short sleeve caps, padded pants with belts, stockings rolled down to their ankles, and ankle-height athletic shoes. They are arranged in an inverted pyramid shape. The player seated in the middle row, right, cradles a basketball labeled: "Cubs / '09."

The Cubs were a Minor League intramural basketball team.

The others are in light-colored t-shirts with short sleeve caps, padded pants, dark stockings rolled down to their ankles, and athletic shoes. The player seated in front center holds out a basketball marked: "Epicure / '09."

The Epicures were a Minor League intramural basketball team.

2553: Innocent V Basketball Team, 1909

Studio portrait of seven young men in front of painted backdrop. One wears a heavy dark sweater with a light-colored turtleneck and broad light-colored stripe. The others wear light-colored tank tops, padded pants, stockings rolled down to their ankles, and athletic shoes. The player seated in the center of the group holds a basketball labeled: "Innocent / 5."

Photographic studio equipment visible on left side of picture: white cloth stretched over a tilting wooden frame. It could be used to diffuse light, but, in this case, it is being used to bounce light into the shadow areas.

The Innocent Five were a Major League intramural basketball team in spring 1909.

2554: Stillwater Basketball Team, 1909

Studio portrait of six young men. One wears a v-neck sweater with an interlocking letters S J U logo, over shirt and tie. The others wear light-colored t-shirts with short sleeve caps, padded pants with belts, dark stockings rolled down to their ankles, and athletic shoes. Four of the players in uniform have their arms crossed. The fifth player, seated in the center of the group, holds a basketball labeled: "Stillwater / '09."

The Stillwater Kids were a Minor League intramural basketball team at St. John's in spring 1909.

2555: Jr. Basketball, 1913

Studio portrait of eight boys in front of a painted background. One wears a heavy button-up sweater with a turn-down pointed collar. The rest wear t-shirts with short sleeve caps. A wide dark strip goes across the middle of the jersey, on which is, diagonally, "Jr." They also wear knee-length pants, striped athletic socks rolled down, and ankle boots. The boy seated in front center holds a basketball labeled "JR '13." The letters J and R on the ball are joined, using only one vertical line.

Junior basketball team.

2557: Eugene Kelley Basketball Team - 1916

Studio portrait of five young men in basketball uniform. They wear dark tank tops with a wide lighter-colored stripe across the middle, dark knee-length pants, striped athletic socks, and ankle-height athletic shoes. The three players seated in front have their arms crossed.

The Teutons were an intramural team in the spring 1916 Minor Basket Ball League. Eugene B. Kelly '16 was team captain.

2559: Panthers Basketball, 1913

Studio portrait of five boys in front of a painted backdrop. They wear t-shirts with short sleeve caps. A wide dark strip goes across the middle of the jersey, on which is, diagonally, "Jr." They also wear knee-length pants, striped athletic socks rolled down, and ankle boots. The boy seated in front center holds a basketball labeled "Panthers / Champs / '12."

The Panthers won the Juniors intramural Minor League basketball championship on December 18, 1912.

He also wears dark knee pants, striped athletic socks, and two-tone ankle-high athletic shoes. He cradles a basketball in one arm.

2568: Loenig and Losleben, Basketball Players, 1916

Full-length studio portrait of two young men standing in front of a painted backdrop. They wear plain dark jerseys, baggy lace-up knee pants, striped athletic socks, and ankle-height shoes or boots. The player on the right holds a basketball between them.

Henry Losleben '17. "Loenig" is most likely a misspelling for Lawrence A. Koenig '16.

2569: Basketball Team - 1913

Portrait of a basketball team lined up in front of a dark curtain. They wear plain dark jerseys, gym trunks with belts, dark knee socks rolled down slightly, and ankle-height athletic shoes. The boy in the middle cradles a basketball labeled: "Zimmies / Minor Champs / '21." Above the players is a pennant reading: "St. J U Jr. Basket Ball '21."

The Zimmies were a Junior intramural basketball team in the Minor League in spring 1921.

"Bowling" is crossed out on the envelope, with "Basketball" written above it.

2619: Jr. Minor Champs, Basketball Team, 1919

Studio portrait of six boys suited up for basketball. They wear plain dark jerseys, lace-up knee pants with belts, dark stockings, and ankle-height athletic shoes. The boy seated in front center holds a basketball labeled: "Minor '19 / Champs."

The Buicks were the champions of the Junior intramural basketball Minor League in spring 1919.
