Student Photographs (cartes de visite), 1887
1. Frank A. Beyenka. Studio portrait of boy with tousled hair. He wears coat and tie. Pin hole at top. Written on back: "Frank Beyenka, March -- 87."
2. Frank A. Beyenka. Oval format head-and-shoulders studio portrait of boy wearing a checked jacket and patterned tie. On pink card with rounded corners and red beveled edge. Written on back: "Fr Beyenka, Nov 6/87," and, in another hand, "Frank Beyanka."
3. Theodore Bruning. Full-length studio portrait of young man decked out in three-piece suit, cravat, tie tack, pocket square, and watch chain. He stands with one hand on the fringed armrest of a posing chair. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Bruning, Student from Richmond, Oct 1887," and, in another hand, "Theodore Bruening."
4. Anthony J. Casper. Head-and-shoulders studio portrait of short-haired young man in coat and tie. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Casper, May 1887."
5. Charles F. Drum. Head-and-shoulders studio portrait of boy in checked jacket, patterned tie, and hat. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back, "Chas Drum, March 87," and, "Went to Reformatory."
6. Morgan Ford. Full-length studio portrait of young man in suit and tie. He stands, resting his hand on an ornate pillar decorated with strings of leaves. Bottom left corner of card damaged. Written on back: "Morgan Ford, June 20/87, Com Graduate."
7. Morgan Ford. Same photo as number 6 above. Full-length studio portrait of young man in suit and tie. He stands, resting his hand on an ornate pillar decorated with strings of leaves. Bottom of card cut off. Pin hole in top center. Back still glued to a scrap of a topographic map. Written on back: "M Ford, Comm Grad, 1887."
8. Michael Girsch. Studio portrait of boy wearing a plain suit and cravat. Written on back: "Mich. Girsch, 1887, Jan. 27." Same photo as folder 20 (1886), number 12. This copy is a darker print.
9. Mathias Hoffmann. Studio portrait of a boy wearing a suit and patterned bow tie. On white card with rounded corners and thin gold rule. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Math Hoffmann, 1887."
10. Henry Kenck. Head-and-shoulders studio portrait of a boy wearing a jacket with pocket handkerchief and a striped tie. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Henry Kenck, June 8/87."
11. Frank Koch. Studio portrait of a boy wearing a suit and patterned bow tie. His jacket is open to show a watch chain with a medal. Top of card cut off. Written on back: "Frank Koch, 1887."
12. Frank Koch. Same photo as number 11, above, but masked in an oval format. Pin holes on top and bottom. Back of card damaged; appears to have been affixed to something. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Frank Koch, St. Paul, School year 1886-87, Medal for Good Conduct, June 22, 1887."
13. Louis La Bissoniere. Head-and-shoulders studio portrait of a boy with straight hair. He wears a suit with a checked jacket, patterned cravat, and shirt with turn-down collar. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "La Bissoniere," and, in another hand, "Theodore, 85-87," but is same photo as folder 20 (1886), number 13.
14. Theophile La Bissoniere. Vignetted head-and-shoulders studio portrait of dark-haired young man wearing a jacket, patterned necktie, and tie tack. 2 copies. Both have pin holes. Written on back of first copy: "Theophile La Bissonier, Red Lake Falls, Minn, 1885-7." Written on back of second copy: "Theophile La Bissioner of Red Lake Falls, Minn. 1885-86 & 1886 & 87. Left Mar. 29, -87-."
15. Leiendecker. Full-length studio portrait of young man wearing three-piece suit, necktie, and watch chain. He stands, resting his hand on an ornate pillar decorated with strings of leaves. On blue card. Written on back: "Leiendecker, 1887." Could be August Leiendecker or John Leiendecker, both from St. Mark, Kansas. See number 16, below.
16. Leiendecker. Full-length studio portrait of short-haired young man wearing three-piece suit, necktie, tie tack, and watch chain. He stands, resting his hand on an ornate pillar decorated with strings of leaves. Written on back: "Leiendecker, 1887." Could be August Leiendecker or John Leiendecker, both from St. Mark, Kansas. This man has shorter hair, and may be the older of the two. See number 15, above.
17. Clemens Mayer. Oval format head-and-shoulders studio portrait of a boy wearing a suit and a boldly striped necktie. Written on back: "Clement Mayer, Glencoe, Minn., Feb 1887."
18. Edward Oie. Studio portrait of fair-haired boy wearing a suit and patterned bow tie. Written on back: "E. Oie, 1887."
19. Louis Olivier. Head-and-shoulders studio portrait of boy with short, dark hair. He wears suit and tie, and a hat. Pin holes in top and bottom center. Back of card glued to scrap of paper. Photographer: Peter Engel, O.S.B. Written on back: "Louis Olivier, Feb. 26, 87." Same photo as folder 18 (1884), number 19.
20. Joseph Prager. Head-and-shoulders studio portrait of a young man with a receding hairline and a walrus mustache. He wears a suit and bow tie, with only the top button of his jacket fastened. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back, "Prager, May 1887," and, in another hand, "Joseph."
21. Edward Roessler. Studio portrait of boy in checked jacket with pocket handkerchief, tie, and tie tack. Pin hole in top center. Back of card still glued to scrap of topographic map. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Eddie Roessler, St. Paul, March, 87."
22. Norbert Rouleau. Studio portrait of a boy wearing a jacket with a Peter Pan collar, and a watch chain. Only the top button of his jacket is fastened. 2 copies. Top of card is cut off on first copy. Written on back: "Norb Rouleau, 1887." Same photo as folder 20 (1886), number 20.
23. Norbert Rouleau. Same photo as number 22, above, but as part of a composite print. The portrait is in an oval format in the center. Around it is what appears to be a close-up photograph of a birch twig and leaf, with grass in the background. On gray card with gold beveled edge. Imprint on back: "St. John's University Art Gallery, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Norbert Rouleau, 1887."
24. Norbert Rouleau. Full-length studio portrait of a boy wearing jacket with pocket handkerchief, vest, watch chain, standing collar, light-colored necktie with a cross for a tie tack, short pants, and dark stockings. He stands, resting his hand on an ornate pillar. On card with rounded corners and red beveled edge. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Norbert Rouleau, 1887."
25. Frank Schaaf. Possibly a First Communion portrait. Studio portrait of boy wearing three-piece suit with a large corsage or boutonniere and white gloves. He holds a small book in one hand. On card with gold edges. Pin holes in top and bottom center. Photographer: T.M. Swem, St. Paul. Written on back: "Frank Schaaf," and, in another hand, "83-87."
26. Anthony Seifert. Full-length studio portrait of boy wearing three-piece suit, watch chain, and patterned bow tie. He stands in front of a painted background, resting one hand on a draped piece of furniture. The posing stand is visible. Pin hole in bottom center of card. Written on back: "Seifert, Anthony, 1884-87. Now (1936) at Great Falls, Montana."
27. Michael Walz. Full-length studio portrait of boy in three-piece suit and necktie. He stands, resting his forearm on an ornate pillar decorated with strings of leaves. Right edge of print appears to be chemically damaged. Pin hole in top center. Upper left corner of print torn off. Back of card damaged; was affixed to something. Written on back: "Mich. Walz, March - 87," and, in another hand, "Michael Walz."
