Student Photographs (cartes de visite), 1885

1. John Brookmann. Head-and-shoulders portrait of boy with very short hair, wearing jacket and bow tie. Oval format. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Jno Brookmann, June 18/85."

2. William James Dunbar and William Gaughan. Full-length studio portrait of two young men in suit and tie, in front of painted background. The man on the left is seated; the man on the right stands, resting his hand on the first's shoulder. Some damage to upper left of card. Written on back: "Wm Dunbar & Wm Gaughan, from Erin, St Croix Co., Wis., Jan 1885."

3. Joseph Eich. Faded full-length studio portrait of young man in suit and tie, standing with his hand resting on an open-backed chair. On pink card. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Jos Eich, St Cloud, June 85."

4. Frederick W. Faber and Adolph Stierle. Full-length studio portrait of two boys in suit and tie, with pocket handkerchiefs, in front of a painted background. Faber is seated on a fringed posing chair, on the left. Stierle, on the right, stands slightly behind him and rests a hand on his shoulder. Pin holes in upper right and lower left. Written on back: "left to right: Fred Faber, 1881-4; Adolph Stierle, 1882-5." Not taken at the same time as folder 18 (1884), number 7.

5. Adolph Stierle and Frederick W. Faber. Full-length studio portrait of two boys in suit and tie, in front of a painted background. Faber is seated on a fringed posing chair, on the right. Stierle, on the left, stands slightly behind him and rests a hand on his shoulder. 2 copies. Same as folder 18 (1884), number 7. Written on back of first copy: "A. Stierle (standing), F. Faber." On back of second copy: "F. Faber (sitting), A. Stierle," and, in another hand, "82-85."

6. James Galen. Full-length studio portrait of a young man in a three-piece suit. Only the top button of his jacket is fastened. He stands with his hand resting on an open-backed chair, in front of a painted background. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "James Galen, Jan 1885."

7. William Gergen. Head-and-shoulders portrait of a young man in suit and striped bow tie. He wears a medal hanging from a ribbon on his lapel. Vignette. Pin hole in top center of print. Photographer: A.A. Scott, Hastings, Minn. Some damage on back; was previously attached to something. Written on back: "Wm. Gergen, Hastings, Minn."

8. John M. Hammerel. Full-length studio portrait of a boy wearing a suit and a large corsage with ribbon. He stands beside an ornate column and rests the base of a tall candle on it. Also on the column is a small book. First Communion portrait. 2 copies. First copy has pin hole in top. Stamped on back of first copy: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back of first copy: "Johnnie Hammerel -- My first Com. April 12 -- 1885, St. John's University." Written on back of second copy: "J.M. Hammerel, May 9 1885."

9. John M. Hammerel and George Pfeifer. Full-length studio portrait of two boys in suits. Hammerel, on the left, is standing, and wears a bow tie. He rests his hand on the elbow of Pfeifer, who is seated and wears a watch chain. In front of a painted background. Pin hole in top center. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Johnnie Hammerel and Geo. Pfeifer, Jan. 23, 1885."

10. Edward J. Hill. Full-length studio portrait of young man in suit and tie. He stands with on hand on his hip, and the other resting on an open-backed chair. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Hill, Student, Sept 25/85," and, in another hand, "Edward."

11. Mathias Justin. Portrait of young man in jacket and bow tie, with his hair parted in the middle. He has one hand inside his jacket. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Math Justin, Rev. Buh's Nephew, Feb 1885." Name of uncle is not clear, could be mistaken.

12. Joseph H. Kray. Full-length studio portrait of boy in three-piece suit and a large corsage with ribbon. He stands beside an ornate column and rests the base of a tall candle on it. First Communion portrait. 2 copies. First copy has pin hole in top. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back of first copy: "Jos. Kray -- One of my my first Com. April 12, 85, St. John's University." Written on back of second copy: "Jos Kray, Cold Spring, Minn., Apr 30/85."

13. Eugene Labonte. Full-length studio portrait of boy in suit and tie, overcoat with contrast cuffs, and knit or crochet winter scarf. He stands in front of a painted background, resting one elbow on a draped piece of furniture. On dark brown card with gold beveled edge. Written on back, "E La Bonte," and, in another hand, "83-85." Not the same pose as folder 18 (1884), number 16.

14. Max Legault. Head-and-shoulders portrait of a young man in suit and tie. His hair is parted in the middle. Oval format. On blue card. Written on back: "Max Legault, Chippewa Falls, Wis.," and, in another hand, "83-84-85."

15. Jacob Leuf. Full-length studio portrait of a young man with short hair, playing the violin. He wears a suit and watch chain, and stands beside a round table and a chair, in front of a painted background. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Jacob Leuf, Student, Hastings, Mar 12, 1885."

16. Patrick McNulty. Full-length studio portrait of a young man in three-piece suit and bow tie, seated on a fringed posing chair, in front of a painted background. His jacket is open. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Patrick McNulty, Oriska, D.T., May 21 '85."

17. Frank Mitchell. Full-length studio portrait with short hair and a widow's peak. He is wearing a jacket with pocket handkerchief and a large corsage with a ribbon, short pants, and dark stockings. He stands beside an ornate column and rests the base of a tall candle on it. First Communion portrait. Pin holes in upper and lower right. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back: "Frank Mitchell, April 12, 1885."

18. George Pfeifer. Vignetted head-and-shoulders studio portrait of boy with very short hair. He is wearing suit and tie. On pink card. Written on back: "Geo. H. Pfeifer, St. Paul. St. John's U., June 5 -- 85."

19. Henry Schaeffer. Full-length studio portrait of young man in three-piece suit, tie, and watch chain. His jacket is unbuttoned. He stands in front of a painted background and rests an arm on an open-backed chair. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back, "Schaeffer, New Trier, Jan 188," and, in another hand, "Henry" and the final digit "5."

20. Anthony Seifert. Full-length studio portrait of boy in suit, watch chain, and large corsage with ribbon. He stands beside an ornate column and rests the base of a tall candle on it. First Communion portrait. 2 copies. Pin hole in upper right of first copy. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back of first copy: "Antony Seifert, one of my first Com. at St John's University -- April 12, '85'." Written on back of second copy: "Anton Seifert, Jordan Minn, Apr 20 / 85."

21. Francis Seifert and George Schutz. Full-length studio portrait of two young men in suits, seated at round table in front of painted background. Schutz, on the right, holds a book in his lap. 3 copies. Stamped on back: "St. John's University Photographic Studio, Collegeville, Minn." Written on back of first copy: "Frank Seifert, Jordan; George Schutz, Chaska. Jan 23 / 85." Written on back of second copy: F. Seifert & Geo Schutz," and, in another hand, "85'." Written on back of third copy: "Geo Schutz (holding the book) and Frank Seifert," and, in another hand, "85-86."

22. Raymond J.B. Smith. Head-and-shoulders studio portrait of boy in jacket, turn-down collar with pin dot pattern, and cravat. Written on back: "Ray Smith, 'Ramy,'" and, in another hand, "79-'85."

23. Adolph Stierle. Head-and-shoulders portrait of young man with dark wavy hair. He wears a jacket and broad bow tie. 1885. Pin hole in top. Photo studio: Essery, St. Paul. Back damaged; was previously affixed to something. Written on back: "(Dr) Adolph Stierle, 1882-85, St Paul Minn."

24. John Wolf. Oval format head-and-shoulders portrait of young man in suit and patterned bow tie. On pink card. Written on back: "Jno. Wolf, Jordan, Minn., 1884-1885." Same photo as folder 18 (1884), number 27, just on a different color of card.
