1. Charles Essler. Studio portrait of a young man in suit coat and necktie, with shirt collar turned up. Written on front: "Chas. Essler, St. Peter, Minn." On back: "Essler was a student of St. John's 1877. He lost an eye in 1879 in its [?] foundry by an explosion. 1879." "its" might be "the."

2. Joseph Gillitzer. Studio portrait of a boy in suit and tie. Inner jacket has piping; outer jacket looks big on him. Photo studio: Ragan & Munn, Atchison, Kan. Identified on back as Joseph Gillitzer, who attended St. John's in 1878-1879.

3. Peter Kapellen. Studio portrait of boy in jacket and tie. One arm is on a padded armrest. Photographer: L.E. Meason, La Crosse, Wis. Written on back: "P. Capellen, June 25, 1879."

4. George Kaup. Head-and-shoulders studio portrait of a young man wearing a suit, fancy cravat with tie tack, and shirt with wing collar. On pink card. Photographer: G. Kramer, St. Louis, Mo. Written on back: "Geo Kaup, born July 5, 1862, Presented to me Sept 6, 1879."
