Biographical / Historical

Psalm 30 is a thanksgiving song for deliverance. Considered a winter-time psalm, it was most likely sung at the ritual Dedication of the Temple after the Maccabaean revolt (BC 164). Possibly pre-exilic in origin, it mayhave belonged to purificatory rites in thanksgiving for the restoration of health from the verge of death.

Huijbers has composed it as a lyrical through-setting poece, with echoes of Gregorian chant lingering throughout. There is no interruption in the pulse beween verse and refrain, which flow freely into each other. In the tradition of Gelineau, the verses are assigned to a cantor, while an optional descant has been provided to embellish the singing of the refrains
