Biographical / Historical
This, the first antiphonal/responsorial setting of Psalm 22, is a simple setting for unison choir and assembly, in with each choir verse consists only of two phrases, the second of which is generally the insistent text of the emphatic refrain. Huijbers set in a 9/8tempo, to enhance the rhythmic flow of the piece. As with many of his earlier composition, it is modal in character, stronly influenced by his Gregorian tradition Omnis Spiritus, with roots in celebrating the Ascension, was the melodic source for the piece. Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost are all one event, about the power of the Creator Spirit in the world. She Who is with God at the beginning (Proverbs 8:22-32) is the mother of creation, in whose womb all that is came to be. Huijbers set this piece in the hypodorian mode, to incluclate the sense of peace and serenity --Tony Barr
