Scope and Contents

Great forerunner of the morn (Ut Quaeant Laxis) PT 213 Text: The Venerable Bede (673-735); tr. John Mason Neale (1818-1866), alt.; Office hymn for the Feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist (June 24). Tune: Ut quaeant laxis; Plansong, Mode II, Liber Us

This is Proulx's transcription of "Ut Quaeant Laxis." On the top of the composition, Proulx wrote the following: "This text has not been designated by the Hymn Music Committee to be plainsong. However, here is an attempt to reconcile the metre of this translation with the historic tune. Of all the versions studied, that found in the Liber Usualis was the easiest and most 'flexible' to work with. It would be a fine 'music history' lesson to have the Latin stanza included." It is unclear if this has ever been published.
