I was glad, 1993
Scope and Contents
I was glad / CHH Perry ; Richard Proulx OVERSIZE
According to a letter written by Proulx that is included in this file, Proulx felt that a new edition of Parry's "I Was Glad" ("clearly engraved, using 'American' quarter rests, etc.") would be welcomed by choirs ("because the Novello/H.W. Gray edition is hard to read and the organ reduction of the orchestral score is awkward to play, and not idiomatically suited to the organ as it stands"). Proulx orchestrated this piece for brass and timpani to be played by the musicians at the Cathedral in Chicago in 1982. In 1993 he sent a copy of the score of this edition and a letter to a "Mr. Broido," offering his edition for possible publication. Proulx admits that his version is not completely ready for publication as it is, but he wanted to send it off to get some feedback. Included in this file are the following: a full score of Proulx's edition of CHH Parry's "I Was Glad" with organ, brass choir, timpani, and SSATTB choir; individual parts of Proulx's version (trumpets I and II in C; trombones I, II, and III; tuba; horns I and II in F; timpani); the originally published version by C. Hubert H. Parry (H.W. Gray Publications: GCMR 2404); various small pieces of paper with bits of music from this piece; and Proulx's letter to "Mr. Broido," explaining his score.
These copy manuscripts appear to have been acquired through Novello & Co. Ld. Though there are only instrumental parts in this file, there must have been vocal parts also since in the instrumental parts there is evidence of this.
