Psalm tones from K"ln
Scope and Contents
Psalm tones from K"ln ; From mass XV, adapted / Richard Proulx. No authorship is cited on this manuscript work, with the exception of the second page ("from Mass XV, adapted") which reads "-Hymn Tune from Salzburg, 1781 "Gott, vor deinem Angesichte."
Included in this file are 5 total pages. The original file's title was, "Psalm Presentation," so apparently Proulx put these pages (and probably others) together for a presentation on setting psalms to chant and faux-bourdons. Two pages ("11" and "12") contain a chart of psalm tones with various endings (simple and elaborate) - "according to Sarum use (Salisbury)." This chart was to be used as an aid when writing chant, to help in the selection of appropriate endings to use when coordinating with various antiphons. Two other pages ("13" and "14") contain examples of how to set text to chant and faux-bourdons (Proulx's work). Page 13 contains music for the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time (C): antiphon (Plainsong, tone V), psalm 33 in unison chant and faux-bourdons, as well as Plainsong, tone VIII in unison and faux-bourdons. Page 14 contains examples of Anglican Chant (which was an outgrowth of psalm tones and faux-bourdons). An example of a "single" chant (2 phrases) by Viadana (16th c.), an example of a "double" chant (4 phrases) by Waimsley (19th c.), and an unidentified style by Dupuis (18th c.) are included on this page. One final page ("1"), entitled, "The Psalms," is included in this file. On this page there are 5 different chant settings: "Asar teno hodeho al hassomojim" (a Yemenite Psalm Melody); "Laudate Dominum omnes gentes; laudate Dominum omnes populi" (Gregorian Pslam Tone I); "In exitu Israel de Aegypto, domus Jacob de populo barbaro" (Tonus Peregrinus); "Shema Israel, Adonay Elohenu, Adonay echad" (Melody of the Persian Jews); "I will talk of your commandments, and have respect according to your ways" (Gregorian Psalm Tone I - 4).
