Scope and Contents

Les paroles finale de Saint Louis / Richard Proulx. This piece is an original Proulx manuscript with corrections of an organ work commissioned by The Church of Saint Louis.

This organ piece was commissioned by The Church of Saint Louis, King of France, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, for the dedication of Casavant Freres Organ Opus 3762, April 4, 1998. It was played by Thom Robertson, organist at Saint Louis Church. Subsequent performances took place in Princeton, N.M., Washington, D.C., and London. There are notes and a program in this file indicating that on June 20th, 2001, the piece was premiered on the West Coast, played by Audrey Jacobsen, Principal Cathedral Organist of Holy family Roman Catholic Cathedral, Diocese of Orange, CA. Proulx's notes regarding how he was inspired to write the piece and the circumstances in which he came to learn of the words of Saint Louis are included with the music. There is a "corrected" copy of the manuscript, as well as two earlier versions. The following quote of Saint Louis is included on the first page of the manuscript: "I think more of the little church where I was baptized than of the great cathedral where I was crowned. For the dignity of a child of God, which was bestowed on me at baptism, is greater than that of the ruler of the kingdom. The latter I shall lose at death, the other will be my passport to everlasting glory.....Lord, now I enter your dwelling and there I will adore you."
