Scope and Contents

The following, found on an informational page in the file, describes this piece: "The Messe de Saint-Louis by Chicago composer richard Proulx was commissioned by the Church of Saint Louis in Saint Paul, Minnesota and received its first performance there on the Feast of Saint Louis, Sunday 25 August, 2002. The new Mass setting is cast in six movements: chant de supplication (Kyrie), chant de louange (Gloria), Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, Amen, and Agnus Dei. French, English, Latin and Greek texts are employed as optional enrichments. The work is scored for cantor, mixed choir, congregation, organ, and optional trumpet or four brass or brass quintet. For ordinary use, the Mass may be performed by cantor, congregation and organ, without choir or brass. The Messe de Saint-Louis has particular French overtones in its use of modality and post-impressionist harmony. Many melodic fragments are taken from the quasi-plainchant 'Messe Royale' by Henri Dumont (1610-1684), a benchmark of congregational song in both France and Quebec." Included in this file (2 file folders) are the following: information page(s); sketches of melodic fragments from Dumont's Messe Royale; early sketches of each of the sections of the Mass; 1 complete manuscript (and 2 incomplete manuscripts) of the score; multiple manuscript versions of each section of the Mass; congregation parts of each section of the Mass; an engraved version of the Gloria for cantor, congregation and organ; manuscript score of choir part of the Sanctus; 2 copies of each of the following parts: Trumpet I in C, Trumpet II in C, Trombone I (or Horn I in F), Trombone II (or Horn II in F), Tuba; 2 worship booklets (that contain the Messe de Saint-Louis) created by The Church of Saint Louis, King of France for the Feast Day of Saint Louis, King of France (August 25, 2002); a worship aid created by Saint Clement's Church, Chicago, which contains this Mass; an invitation to attend a fund banquet for Saint Louis, King of France Church; 5 letters [1 from Proulx to Rev. Paul F. Morrissey, S.M., the Church of Saint-Louis, King of France, St. Paul, MN; 2 from Father Morrissey to Proulx; and 2 from Thom Robertson (Choirmaster-Organist) to Proulx]. It is unclear if this piece has ever been published.
