Biographical / Historical

This Gregorian-style setting, in which 10 verses are sung to cone common formula, is an inversion of the Latin Pentecost Sequence, Veni Sancte Spiritus. Whereasthe entire corpus of the Gregorian collection as assembled in the Liber Usualis, this piece as speculatively been attributed to either Pope Innocent III (1161-1216) or to Stephen Langton (11 50-1228). Veni Sancte Spiritus is one of only four medieval Sequences to be preserved in the Roman Missal of 1570 following the Council of Trent (1545–63). Before Trent many feasts had their own sequences. It may still be heard sung today in Latin by some parishes on Pentecost Sunday, as the sequence hymn leading up to the Gospel proclamation. Huijbers provided 3 accompaniment modules, each of which varies in color as a rich illustration of such a simple yet forceful text. The third figure my well be reserved for the final verse.
