Biographical / Historical
In his setting of Home Form Our Exile - Psalm 126 [JM 269], Huijbers wrote the piece in 6:8, but added an obligato flute duet as a contrasting dance-like figure in a cross-rhythmic 3:4. Similarly in this piece, Song of the Sun, the accompaniment is likewise in 6:8, but the the contrasting dance-like figure is given to the singers, seemingly in 2:4. Yet Huijbers was insistant that it should be conducted in 6:8, to create the rhythmic tension for the vocalists. Verses 1-3, in unison use formula A, verses 4-5 in harmony sing formula B, verse 6 in unison recapitulates formula A, and the final verse 7, in full harmony, returns to formula B. The tension is maintained throughout by the assemnly refrain, who sing a tightly controlled tessitura, above the relentless flow of the accompaniment. SONG OF THE SUN, cont. (23)
