The musical structure of this piece is consistent throughout, a pattern of A, A, B, A in each verse. Huijbers responds to the literary form of a song of ascent by modulating the verses three times: verses 1-4, 5-7. 8-10, 11. Modally, I would identify the piece as being hypomyxolydian.
