Biographical / Historical
The pastoral imagery of this psalm suggests a ritual thanksgiving meal held in the Temple, to celebrate a victory over the inevitability of attacks by foes who resent the fact that their Deity, YHWH had taken their land away from them and given it to these new settlers, who asserted their ownership both by military might and divine protection. For the psalmist, the Deity is both shepherd and host. Pre-exilic in origin, the likelihood is that this is the song of gratitude of a 'commoner', but would have been proclaimed (sung) in the assembly by a priest. However, in post-exilic times, it would have most likely been sung by an individual other than a member of the priestly caste.
