A song about light and darkness, for the changing times of the year. The structure of the song is based on 2 melodic formulas, A+B Verse 1, formula A the choir Verse 2. formula A for the assembly Verse 3, formula B for the choir Verse 4, formula A for the assembly Verse 5, formula B for the choir Verse 6, formula A (repeated) for the choir then the assembly. Always adhering to the elementary music principles of Carl Orff, he based this piece on a series of simple intervals within a tight tessitura, though allowing more flexibility in the choir verses. Formula A is based on a simple pattern of two descending phrases. Formula B, for choir alone, mirrors phrase A in reverse, though a series of four ascending steps.
