Biographical / Historical
This text is a fragment of a larger poem which Oosterhuis attributes to 1 Thessalonians 5: 5-8. Paul wrote to the people of Thessalonica to warn them against complacency. The resurrection was becoming a distant memory as life seemed to progress as usual. Jesus' promise at the ascension that he was preparing a place and would return to claim those who had remained faithful to his memory seemed to be little more than a forgotten promise. Chapter 5 is a call to vigilance while awaiting the return of Jesus, a messiah who does what he said he would. It is a warning against living in darkness since we are all children of light. We may be made of dust, but this is all originally stardust.
