The melody for this song is based on It is a song about a dream, and about a world in which this dream, the impossible, could perhaps come true if only.... Given the subject matter, it is nevertheless an extraordinarily humble song. 'Who dares to long for....?' The melody is based on the old Gregorian Passion Gospel tone for Good Friday. Passion is the key to understanding this piece. Only through Jesus' suffering and death could the Resurrection happen, and only through the Resurrection might we dream a better world into being. Roman spirituality understands the Crucifixion is the apex of human drama. The metaphorical story of Adam'd fall is the first instance of God's mercy being shown to us. We sing O happy fault, O necessary sin of Adam, which merited us so great a Redeemer in the Easter Exultet. The Prophets unveiled the second phase, as interpreted in the letters of St. Paul, from which grew Gospel tradition. The Gospels were written not with the Infancy Narratives as their starting point, but the enigma of the crucifixion. How might we understanding the fate of a peripatetic Mid-Eastern wisdom teacher who took on his shoulders the weight of humanity? Since the Resurrection, Jesus is entngled in the human condition, revealing the third phase, of new pathways where no roads have ever gone.
