Scope and Contents

On the Prairie between Watab and Belle Prairie, 1870 Mixed-media drawing, 7 1/4 x 10 1/4 inches. Watercolor and ink over pencil. Inscribed "On the prairie between Watab & Belle Prairie, May 12th 1870: H.A. Lambert, Jno Caulfield, Wm Markoe." Earlier title in pencil at lower left: "From St. John's College to Belle Prairie, a advance of 50 miles in two days." This page unsigned. Shows three stick figure-like men wearing hats and knapsacks walking over a gently rolling landscape. Colors predominantly a warm brown, with blue and gray in the sky. Black square in lower right with white label A 78. 1/2 inch rip on right edge. Attached but covered by tissue is a second drawing "St. John's in the Wilderness." Signed W.F. Markoe at lower left. Pencil and watercolor. Sketches of goldenrod, a columbine in bloom, a wild geranium, a bee and dragonfly, a ladyslipper, a wild rose, and a blade of grass. At lower right is a very small (3/4 inch x 1 1/2 inches) drawing of St. John's with only two buildings: the old Stone House, and the old two-story south wing of the Quad (Raphael Hall). Pencil lettering on the back: Roasters. Shoo Fly. Cows on the track. St. Paul. Minneapolis. Accompanied by two pages, typed, signed "W.F.M." A speech describing the drawings at the jubilee of one of priests. Main drawing depicts the journey on foot of three St. John's students to Crow Wing to assist Fr. Tomazin with Holy Week services on the Indian reservation in 1870: William F. Markoe, Johnnie Caulfield, and Harry Lambert. All three are class of 1870. Harry (Henry A.) Lambert has "long since passed to his reward," but Markoe says that Louis DeMeules '70, who died in 1885, died "a few years ago." Transferred to University Archives from Abbey Archives July 28, 2017. Label "A 78" on front page is probably their mark.
