Photographs, University Correspondence and Events

Mainly correspondence related to Bela Petheo as a teacher. Also informal photos, a few St. John's University publications, and a few documents related to events at St. John's and elsewhere in Minnesota.

Informal photos, all but one black and white, from 3 1/2 x 4 to 8 x 10. Includes one contact sheet. Bela Petheo in the studio, with students, with self-portraits, or at his Duluth show.

Letter from John Crosby, July 7, 1997. Sorry he missed Bela Petheo's retirement party. Laura still talks about how supportive Bela was. Letter from Dietrich Reinhart, July 21, 1997. He admired Laura Crosby's exhibit at the Benedicta Arts Center, and recalls a photo exhibit she did years earlier about student volunteer programs. Handwritten note at bottom: "After his death, I painted his portrait. He was also briefly my student in my art hist. class. BP, 2011."

Letter to Henry R. Hope, March 23, 1971. About an article in Art Journal and the reaction to it. Bela Petheo sends "Notes" on the topic, for possible publication.

Letters from Mrs. Robert Klein, October 26, 1974 and November 11, 1974. One of Bela Petheo's paintings won an award in the National Small Painting Exhibition. Confusion about price.

Correspondence with Allen Klink, April 26-April 30, 1968. Stout State proposes a summer exhibition of Bela Petheo's work; he suggests mid-October instead.

Letter to Philip Larson, March 5, 1975. Bela Petheo is disappointed but not surprised by Larson's response to Jim Hendershot's idea for a show at the Walker. The other museums in Minneapolis are no more supportive of figurative art, and not even all landscape artists are the same. CC'ed to James Burpee and Paul Olsen. 2 copies. Letter from Philip Larson, February 21, 1975. Mentions Jim Hendershot's art. Does not think that Bela Petheo's proposal for an exhibit of portraiture would fit at the Walker Art Center, where they are highlighting experimental work.

Letter to Malcolm Myers, September 30, 1968. Invitation to Bela Petheo's exhibit at the Coffman Memorial Union Art Gallery. Bela would also be available for questions.

Correspondence with Carlo Quintavalle, Vincent Tegeder, and Ernesto Moro, May 29, 1967-October 8, 1968. Some letters are in Italian. Quintavalle, an art professor, proposed a booklet about Bela Petheo as a painter and graphic artist. Ernesto Moro was with the publisher Nuova STEP, Parma. The booklet itself is in Bela Petheo's Rank and Tenure file (1583:4), and Alcuin Library has an autographed presentation copy.

Letter from Hilary Thimmesh, October 23, 1967. Urges Bela Petheo to stay on campus during January term rather than travel to New Orleans.

Has article by Willem Ibes on the state of the music program at St. John's, which is prefaced by a note saying there will be a companion piece on the plastic arts written by Bela Petheo in the next issue.
