This piece is a classic example of Huijbers' composite form of writing. He has created a seamless tapestry of 3 different musical forms: acclamation/canon, recitative, and litany. The refrain makes a compelling use of interval technique, opening with two rising in fifths as a call to awaken and be attentive. The recitative verses use the same formula as the refrain, but in a free form unlike the strict 4/4 tempo of the refrain. The three verses of the litany are suitably based on the Gregorian Easter Sequence, Victimae Paschali Laudes, though set to a strictly metered tempo. The canon weaves its own tapestry from the elementary forms of the refrain. The piece almost bristles with urgency and excitement. If the Easter Fire blazes to the heavens, this piece well exemplifies Did not our hearts burn within us as we heard him speak with us on that Emmaus journey? -- Tony Barr
