Biographical / Historical
The Gathering Rites and Liturgy of the Word of the Amsterdam Christmas Vigil Liturgy are celebrated as one, seamless and integrated event. The Liturgy opens with the Gathering song, This Is The Day, which incorporates verses from the Psalms and Scripture readings of the night, and the Penitential Rite, Kyrie eleis. This leads directly to the Scripture readings, culminating in the sung Gospel Proclamation of Luke's account of the Nativity, which ends with the Gloria, the Glory To God song of the Angels, as a canonic affirmation of the Gospel by the assembly. The homily draws its theme from all of these preceding elements. Huijbers never published the Gospel chant, nor the canon, other than to a different set of words.
All three sung texts are integrated, musically. The gathering song refrain is inverted, to form the Gregorian tone for the Gospel chant, and the concluding canon inverts this, reverting to the same melos as the gathering refrains, but now in the higher key of G with a 6:8 timing, against the original key of F and 2:4 timing.
We considered it important to include all three pieces as one integrated unity.-- Tony Barr
