The action takes place in the Deep South some time during the present century. Orchestra: 3 Flutes; 2 Oboes; Cor Anglais; E-flat Clarinet; 2 B-flat Clarinets; Bass Clarinet in B-flat; 3 Bassoons; Contra-bassoon; 4 saxophones [1 soprano, 3 alto] are optional); 4 Horns in F; 4 Trumpets in F; 3 Trombones (of which Trombone III is a bass Trombone); 4 Timpani; Harp; Celesta; Glockenspiel; Xylophone; Percussion (Divided between 3 players); Violins I (16 players); Violins II (16 players); Violas (12 players); Cellos (10 players); Basses (8 players).
