Scope and Contents

Gilgamesh Comes Home: an opera in two acts. [Libretto and music by Bryan Beaumont Hays]. Cast: Gilgamesh (Mr. Gill): Tenor; Enkidu (Mr. MacAdoo): Baritone; Humbaba (Mr. Hubbard): Bass; Shamash & Anu (Mr. Golfine): Bass-Baritone; Movie usher: Baritone; Ninsun (Mrs. Nymn): Soprano; Ishtar (Miss Gillicuddy): High soprano; Sacred harlot (Miss Thompson): Mezzo soprano; Time: Then and now. Dedication: To the memory of Max Wald. Other notes on title pages: "Sentimus experimque nos aeternos esse." (Spinoza, Ethics V, 23) "As for man, his days are like grass; he flourished like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more." [Ps. 103:15-16; Revised Standard Version (1952)]. Opera Mrs. Nymn: What a charming film! Miss Gillicuddy: What a horrid film! Miss Thompson: What a darling film! Mr. Gill: What a forceful film! Mr. MacAdoo: What a natural film! Mr. Hubbard: What a moral film! Mrs. Nymn: What a good cry I had! When Jane and Boy were on the verge of being eaten by those crocodiles, I thought I would die. Mr. Gill: Now that's the kind of film I like. It shows you've got to be strong, ruthless even, in this life. You've got to be able to take care of yourself and forge ahead. You have to have will power. If you don't have anything to fight for, why live? Miss Thompson: Johnny Weissmueller is such a darling! He swings through the trees with such grace and ease. Mr. MacAdoo: Tarzan is the symbol of the free man. He lives close to nature, unspoiled, uncontaminated by the System. He's the sort of man I'd like to be. Mr. Hubbard: Now that's a film of great moral value. It shows you no matter what the obstacles are, a man, if he's got what it takes, can overcome them and be successful. That's what makes America great! Miss Gillicuddy: Of course the theme of a child raised by animals is recurrent in the history of mankind, but I'm afraid it's pure myth. It's never been substantiated by the facts. Do you please mind not smoking? Cigarette smoke nauseates me. Mrs. Nymn: Do you see that young man over there? He has a terrible reputation. They say no girl is safe with him in all Uruk. His name is Gilgamesh and he even takes other men's wives. Ah, the stories I could tell about him, la!
