This file contains the score and instrument parts (violins A, B, and C, viola, cello, bass) of Gerald Bales' "Essay for String Orchestra," composed in 1947. These are photocopies of Bates' original manuscripts. Also included in this file is a letter from Gerald Bales dated July 5, 1983, identifying that this music was being sent to Proulx, and that another set of parts for a song entitled "Variants" would follow. It is unclear if Bales ever published this piece.
