Virgil Michel: American Catholic by R.W. Franklin and Robert L. Spaeth is a biography of the monk of St. John's Abbey who pioneered the liturgical movement in the United States. Particular emphasis is given to the connection between liturgy and social justice. Bob Spaeth was then Dean of the College, while Bill Franklin was an associate professor of history.

Virgil Michel and the liturgical movement was Paul Marx's doctoral dissertation in sociology at the Catholic University of America. Both author and subject were monks of St. John's Abbey. Paul Marx was a professor of sociology at St. John's. Father Virgil had been, among other roles, Dean of the College.
