Academic Skills Center, 1974-1990: The Writing Lab: 1979-1980, (August 1980) History of the Academic Skills Center, October 4, 1981: Originated in 1971 from the Developmental Learning Program (DLP). From Fall 1972 to Spring 1981 the program was known as the Fundamental Accelerated Skills Training or the F.A.S.T. Program. In Fall 1981 the program was renamed to Academic Skills Center and it added a new dimension of providing skills for the good students who need or want to be even better. In 1982-1983 the center came under the direction of the General Education Office and includes not only the Writing Lab but the added math skills, job acquisition skills and career life planning.
