Joint Governance Committee, 1972 to 1993-1994: Background information: The Committee was called the Joint Committee on Coordinate Relations until the end of 1995-1996. Since 1996-1997, the Committee has been called the Joint Governance Committee. The Governance Document of December 8, 2000 states that the Academic Affairs committee is a Joint Committee rather than a coordinate committee because the two Boards always meet together. "Joint Committees are made up of representatives from both boards. They function in areas where there is -- or there is desired to be -- a single policy of practice that encompasses both CSB and SJU. The Chair of the Board of each college appoints members from their respective board to joint committees. Joint Committees report to the two boards meeting jointly." (copy of the document of May 7, 1993 is included in the file) May 1993: according to a document revised in 9/15/93 by the two presidents in the 1993-1994 file, the Ad Hoc Committee of Boards on Coordinate Relations was established in the Fall of 1993 by mandate of the two Boards -- it lists the functions of the committee and the secondary functions (those which flow from other functions): "On May 7, 1993, the two Boards approved the document entitled, 'The Governance of the Coordinate Relationship between the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University." It articulated a series of general principles to undergird the coordinate relationship. And it committed the two Boards to embark on a series of actions to ensure the vitality of this relationship. Included in this file is a memo from Warren Janzen and from Miriam Ardolf and Mike Ryan (April 3 and 6, 1990) giving background on the former discussion on various ways to cooperate (May 17 & June 9, 1989)** **May 10, 1991: Notes from an executive session of the joint meeting of the CSB and SJU boards - a discussion of cooperation and issues raised.
