[RESTRICTED] Minutes of the Board of Trustees 1962-1970: [CONFIDENTIAL] College of Saint Benedict: College Leadership, 1913-1961 and College Leadership and Governing Board 1961-2005 (to be updated to 2008 by Colman O'Connell on April 28-30, 2008) Short history of CSB Board with a name change: The first governing body, the Board of Directors, was established when the College of Saint Benedict was separately incorporated in 1961. It consisted of the monastic prioress, subprioress, financial officer and a few others. Also included were the CSB president, Academic Dean, and the Dean of Student Development. In Spring 1967, when the Board of Directors decided to have two lay Board members and a lay president, they changed their name to the Board of Trustees. These two lay members were T. Richard Anderson and Alan Ruvelson. The president was Stanley Idzerda (see "Numbers of Trustees at CSB in various eras from 1961 to 2006 which gives proportion of sisters to lay board members over the years from 1961 to the present) List of Board Chairs from 1964 to 2007: Chairpersons for the CSB Board of Trustees: There were two governing boards: Board of Directors and Board of Advisors: 1964-1966: Mother Henrita Ostendorf was the Chairman of the Board of Directors; Dr. Joseph B. Gaida, was Chairman of the Board of Advisors. There were still two governing bodies but the names changed: 1967-1970: Mother Henrita Ostendorf, Board of Trustees Chairman; Dr. James P. O’Keefe, Associate Board of Trustees Chairman. The present governing body began in 1970. It was called the CSB Board of Trustees and the Chairpersons were as follows: 1970-1973: Mother Henrita Ostendorf, Chairman; 1973-1975: Sister Nora Luetmer, Chairwoman (note the gender); 1975-1977: Sister Ann Machtemes, Chairwoman; 1977-1979: Mother Evin Rademacher, Chairwoman; 1979-1982: Robert Witte, Chairperson (note exclusion of gender reference) 1982-1985: Alex Didier, Chairman (note the gender) 1985-1994: Herman Ratelle, Chair; 1994-1998: Susan Mundale, Chair; 1998-2001: Anne Ford Nelson, Chair; 2001-2004: Susan Lester, Chair; 2004-2007: Ed Kocourek, Chair; 2007- Kathleen Cooney, Chair; Minutes of the Board of Directors: 1963-1964 and 1964-1965: Minutes of the Board of Directors: (1961-1962 through November 2, 1965) and the Board of Trustees (renamed in minutes of December 27, 1965) (Selected comments from some of the Board Minutes are included) 1961 - 1962 Minutes of the Board of Directors October 21, 1961 - Election of officers for the College of St. Benedict, Incorporated - By-laws of CSB, Inc. were presented and adopted November 7, 1961 - Discussion of the function of lay advisors, the number, and the manner of election November 12, 1961 - Publication of the President's Report - Lay Board of Advisors November 30, 1961 - Proposed plans for President's Report 1960-61 January 2, 1962 - Board of Advisors - it was discussed at length and 12 names were recommended (8 men and 4 women). - A committee was appointed to present a list of prospective members January 5, 1962 - S. Sister Firmin argued against doing so September 20, 1966: - Continuation of policy of no students cars on campus December 14, 1966: - Discussion of shared admission person with SJU to help Connie Zierden January 27, 1967 - Application for government loan February 20, 1967: - Discussion on the need to work with SJU in re: cooperation in a planned way -- A Summit Committee on Cooperation (letter from Abbot Baldwin with a list of proposed SJU members) April 1, 1967 - Discussion of what to do with stock given to the College April 10, 1967 - Nominations for membership to Associate Board of Trustees April 14, 1967: - Discussion of the meeting of the Summit Committee on Cooperation on March 4, 1967 included a review of what areas of cooperation were important: "In order to demonstrate religious unity and to achieve greater efficiency in an effort toward academic excellence, the Convent of Saint Benedict and Saint John's Abbey wish to cooperate in joint religious activities, in institutional operations, and on all levels of academic administration, particularly in planning faculty and curricular development in educational facilities." Mother Henrita asked for serious thought on the subject of lay board members but no action taken April 19, 1967 - Plans concerning future dormitory 1967 - 1968: Minutes of the Board of Trustees September 16, 1967: - FT Faculty: 33 sisters and 14 laity = 47 - PT faculty: 5 sisters and 4 laity (1 man, 3 women) - 6 students have registered cars on campus October 30, 1967 - Development report by James Sassen - Tuition gap between CSB and SJU December 19, 1967 - Approval of budget for 1967-68 - Auditor's report accepted - Policy statement regarding narcotics January 19, 1968 - Discuss ways and means of financing the power plant January 31, 1968: - Much discussion on the current difficulties being encountered in our CSB/SJU cooperative program. There is the constant threat of SJU going co-ed -- Abbot Baldwin admitted he has heard President Colman Barry mention it as a possibility but probably not do it in the near future Mother Henrita reports on her efforts to hire Idzerda - Discussion of lay board members but no decision February 27, 1968 - Bids for boilers March 11, 1968: - Announcement of a Co-Institutional Study (Mayhew) - Continued discussion on laymen on Board but no decision yet March 30, 1968: - Board approval of Idzerda as president April 30, 1968: - Board approval of T.R.Anderson and Alan Ruvelson to the Board - Constitution revisions May 24, 1968: - Request from St. Cloud School of Nursing for instructors for certain courses -- agree to try May 27, 1968: - Board members present for Report of the Co-Institutional Study Committee (included Idzerda, T.R.
