Scope and Contents
St. John's University Coat of Arms, 1914. Drawn in black on white paper, 4 5/8 inches w x 4 3/4 inches high. Shield in the center with symbols representing the sun shining on the pines, and possibly the North Star. Two monks, one on either side of the shield, representing "Ora et labora." The monk on the left holds a book; the one on the right holds a shovel. Above the shield is the word "Pax" in a wreath. Below the shield is a scroll with the words "Deus dat incrementum." Around the edge are the words "Universitas Sancti Joannis Baptistae," and just below them in top center, "Fund 1857." Drawn by Gilbert Winkelmann. This logo remained in use until 1938.
